Phobias
A Guide to Facing Your Phobias
Nearly everyone has something that scares them – but the difference between something that scares
a person and a phobia can be the simple fact that there is a point when the fear begins to impact
the lifestyle, the decisions that are made and even the relationships. At this point, the person should
consider undergoing some sort of assessment or treatment that can help them to learn the techniques
that are required to overcome the phobia that has affected them.
Here is a five step guide that people facing a specific phobia can use while they are trying to overcome
their fears:
1. Establish the fear. What are you are afraid of? In order for the fear to be considered a phobia most professionals require the fear to be affecting some part of the life. This means that once the fear begins to impose on relationship with friends and family, or begins to affect the productivity in the workplace or at home it can be considered a phobia. The sufferer should try and narrow down the exact fear to determine the coping methods that are going to be used for the fear.
2. Next, it is important to consider how the fear affects your life. If the fear is of driving consider the benefits of overcoming the fear. You will be able to easily get yourself from point A to point B without having to ask for assistance or rely on public transit.
3. Think about how the fear is going to be overcome and make a list of certain elements that can be used while coping with the fear. Think about breathing, support from friends or family or even methods that can be used while you are completing the fear, including learning more about the fear to ensure that you are confident.
4. Ensure that you are prepared to face the fear. Ensuring that you have the support of a support network while facing the fear can help you to overcome the fear easier. The support network can do everything from providing you with a listening ear while trying to overcome the phobia or providing you with assistance when it comes to working your way through the phobia.
5. Finally, face the fear. Once you have identified a support network and you have determined the coping methods that are going to be used to face the fear, there is nothing left to do but face the fear that is causing the phobia. Take it slow and breathe while you are facing the fear. If at any time you feel rushed, it is fine to take a step back. Using the steps to ensure that you are mentally prepared for facing the fear can result in a successful outcome of overcoming the fear that is causing the phobia.
Using this method, you can create a support system for words of encouragement and assistance while
facing the fear and you can also ensure that you are going to have success when it comes to the fears
that are being addressed, allowing you to regain control of your life.
